La Ventana Baja California Sur

The paradise where the desert meets the Sea of Cortez

Just 40 minutes from La Paz lies La Ventana, a small coastal town that looks like something out of a dream. Here, the arid desert of Baja California Sur meets the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez head-on, creating a striking landscape contrast that captivates at first sight. Mountains, cacti, light-sand beaches, and an endless horizon combine to offer one of the most authentic and beautiful experiences in northwestern Mexico.

One of the world’s best kitesurfing spots

La Ventana is internationally recognized as one of the best kitesurfing destinations on the planet. Between November and March, northerly winds (known as “El Norte”) blow steadily and cleanly, generally ranging from 15 to 30 knots.

Conditions are ideal for all skill levels: beginners find calm waters and a safe environment for learning, while more experienced riders enjoy long sessions, downwinders, and reliable wind almost every day. Wide beaches, warm water, and a global community of kiters make La Ventana a true wind paradise.

Seaside Hot Springs

Just 10 minutes north of La Ventana lies one of the area’s best-kept secrets: Playa Agua Caliente.

At this pristine beach, natural hot spring pools bubble up right at the water’s edge. Temperatures range from 35°C to 45°C year-round, thanks to local geothermal activity. It is the perfect spot to unwind after an intense kitesurfing session—soaking in warm water while listening to the waves and gazing out at the desert landscape. A true natural oasis just minutes from town.

Diving and Extraordinary Marine Wildlife

The Sea of Cortez—dubbed “the aquarium of the world” by Jacques Cousteau—surrounds La Ventana with exceptional marine biodiversity.

In these waters, it is possible to spot dolphins, large schools of mobula rays (especially between April and June), sea turtles, whales (in season), and a wide variety of reef fish. Diving and snorkeling here become unforgettable experiences thanks to the water’s clarity and the rich life inhabiting the gulf.

Cerralvo Island

Cerralvo Island (also known as Jacques Cousteau Island or Serralvo Island) rises majestically off the coast of La Ventana. This pristine island is one of the area’s greatest treasures.

Its crystal-clear waters, reefs, and deep-water zones make it a prime spot for scuba diving, snorkeling, and ocean safaris. Dolphins, mobula rays, sea lions, and—seasonally—whales are commonly found around Cerralvo Island. Sailing to the island and exploring its surroundings is one of the most highly recommended experiences for visitors to La Ventana.

Sport fishing

The Sea of Cortés off La Ventana is also an excellent destination for sport fishing. The deep waters around Isla Cerralvo are ideal for catching species such as dorado, tuna, marlin, roosterfish, and sierra mackerel.

Both shore fishing and boat trips offer great thrills throughout the year, making for a perfect activity to complement days of kitesurfing and round out the experience in this paradise.

La Ventana is not just a kitesurfing destination.

It is a place where the wind, the sea, the desert, and marine life come together to create something unique.
